Adding a Baby to Health Insurance: Deadlines and Steps

A new baby is a qualifying life event, which opens a special enrollment period. Missing it can mean waiting until open enrollment.

The deadlines

Employer plans: you must be given at least 30 days after the birth to add the baby (some plans allow more). Coverage is usually backdated to the date of birth.
Marketplace (HealthCare.gov or your state's exchange): you generally have 60 days to report the birth and change your plan.
Medicaid and CHIP: babies born to a mother on Medicaid are generally covered for the first year. Report the birth to your state agency.

Steps for employer coverage

☐ Call or email HR as soon as you can after the birth
☐ Ask which tier you'll move to (employee + child, family) and the new cost per paycheck
☐ Ask what documents they need (often the birth certificate or hospital record; some accept it later)
☐ Ask whether to add the baby to both parents' plans, and which one is primary
☐ Add dental and vision too, if you want them
☐ Get written confirmation

Steps for a Marketplace plan

☐ Log in and report a life change: birth
☐ Update your expected household size and income (this may raise your premium tax credit)
☐ Choose a plan and confirm the start date
