How To Ask for Help After a Baby (Without Feeling Awkward)
People want to help. Most just don't know how. "Let us know if you need anything" rarely turns into anything until you give them a specific job.
Make a list of real jobs
- Meals (dropped off, not a visit)
- Grocery runs
- Walking the dog
- Taking older kids to school or the park
- Laundry or a load of dishes
- Holding the baby so you can shower or nap
- Rides to appointments
Ask specifically
Specific asks are easier to say yes to:
"Could you bring dinner on Tuesday? Leave it on the porch and text us. We'd love to see you in a few weeks."
"Would you walk Max on Monday and Thursday afternoons for the next two weeks?"
Use one schedule
A free meal-train site or a shared note works. List dates, dietary needs, the drop-off time and whether you want visitors.
Set gentle visitor rules
- Short visits, and call ahead
- Wash hands; stay home if sick
- Visitors who stay should help with something
"We're so happy you want to meet her! We're keeping visits to 30 minutes for now. Could you text before you come?"
Say thank you simply
A short text is enough. Thank-you notes can wait for weeks, or not happen at all, and that's fine.
Look after yourself too
If you feel overwhelmed, very sad or anxious, tell your doctor. The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262). In an emergency, call 911 or 988.
